Ferry-Worthy Summer Events

It feels like the sands of summertime are slipping away but there is still a calendar full of fun to enjoy on – and off – the Island.  Here are my five favorite summer events I never miss on the mainland…and most are just an easy ferry ride away!   These events are only around during the summer months, so don’t miss out!

  • Comic-Con.  Only the biggest comic book convention IN THE COUNTRY takes place right across the Bay at the San Diego Convention Center July 24-27.  If you didn’t buy tickets within the first 15 seconds they were on sale you’re out of luck getting into the convention BUT there are tons of comic book themed events and activities going on all around the Gaslamp.  Streets are closed to accommodate zombie walks, superhero zip lining, parachuters, concerts, fan clubs, bat mobiles, mock battles, and more comic craziness than you can possibly imagine.  I know nothing about comics and/or gaming but I do know people watching, and Comic-Con is epic!  I like to explore the scene then find a table on 5th, order up some drinks, and watch thousands of people parade by in full  costume from Batman to Storm Troopers to whoknowswhat.  The Coronado ferry makes extra runs during Comic-Con and will drop you off right in the heart of the action.

  • Summer Pops.  The San Diego Symphony holds a series of outdoor concerts at the Embarcadero Marina, which is easily accessible by the Coronado ferry or water taxi.  It’s a beautiful venue to catch the sunset while listening to an amazing musical performance.  This summer’s line up includes music of ABBA, Disney’s Fantasia, a Cirque de la Symphonie acrobatics show, and many more impressive acts.   Reserve a table near the stage or put down a blanket on the lawn, order dinner and drinks, and enjoy an evening of culture under the stars.  Tickets and calendar here.

  • Family Movie Night on the Midway.   On August 27th don’t miss a special screening of the animated Disney movie “Planes” on the flight deck of the USS Midway.  Bring blankets, chairs, and snacks (no glass or alcohol allowed) and cozy in for a fun film at an incredible and unique venue.  Gates open at 7pm and movie starts at 8pm. You can take the ferry to the Midway but ferry services end before the movie is over so be sure to plan a ride back to the Island.  More info here.

  • Padres Game. Going to a baseball game is a quintessential summer activity to me whether I actually watch the game or not. There’s just something super summer-y about sporting a ball cap, zooming to the stadium on the water taxi, then sitting in the stands with a beer and hot dog cheering on the home team in the sunshine. The Pads hosts fun events throughout the season like Dog Days of Summer, Winefest, and brunch in centerfield before each Sunday home game.  Grab the water taxi from the Ferry Landing or Seaforth and go cheer on the Padres at beautiful Petco Park. 619.235.TAXI.

  • SD Craft Beer Fest @ Del Mar Horse Races. You can’t take the ferry to this summer event but a fun day at the horse races AND a craft beer fest is totally worth the effort.  Uber up to where the surf meets the turf on Saturday, July 26 to sample over 100 craft beers complimented by gourmet food truck grub while you bet on the ponies and enjoy the sunshine.  Get five 7oz tastings for $18.  Cool as ever.  More info here.
